High School Roundup: Eagles come back to win

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Estancia 2, Huntington Beach 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Heather Flores and Jackie Freiberger helped the Eagles score a come-from-behind nonleague victory Thursday.

Flores and Freiberger both had a goal and an assist for Estancia (3-2-2).

The Oilers scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute.

But Estancia answered in the 30th minute with the Flores-Freiberger duo. Freiberger scored off an assist from Flores.

Then in the 38th minute, Flores scored the game-winner, finishing an assist from Freiberger.

Goalkeeper Ferny Perez was busy for the Eagles. She recorded 11 saves.

“I’m really happy that the girls fought back,” Estancia Coach Jessica Gatica said. “They showed some character and persevered through.”

Estancia will face Paramount Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Bellflower tournament.

Edison 1, Corona del Mar 0

CORONA DEL MAR — Goalie Lindsey Luke recorded two saves for the Sea Kings in the nonleague game Thursday.

Edison’s Rachel Larson scored in first minute on a corner kick.

CdM’s Annie Alvarado nearly scored in the 10th minute when her shot bounced off the crossbar.

The Sea Kings (3-1-2) will compete in the Tri-Valley Invitational Monday in DeAnza.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Estancia 8, Santa Ana 7

SANTA ANA — Sophomore Ilene Umansky recorded four goals in the Eagles’ nonleague game Thursday.

Kylie Carpenter contributed three goals for Estancia (4-8).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 50, Gardena 44

PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Cody Caldwell scored 21 points for the Sailors in a pool-play game of the Palos Verdes tournament Thursday.

David Brown scored 13 points for Newport Harbor (3-6).

The Sailors will face South Torrance in pool play today at 3 p.m. at Palos Verdes High.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Estancia 44, Bolsa Grande 15

COSTA MESA — Celia Duran scored 18 points for the Eagles in the nonleague game Thursday.

Kassie Stratton had eight points, Brenda Soto had six points and Jenny Bolidzar added five points for Estancia (7-4). Starter Yessenia Maldonado did not play, as she was nursing an ankle injury.

The Eagles also beat Santiago, 51-27, Wednesday night.

Capistrano Valley 49, Newport Harbor 26

SANTA ANA — Kasey Thompson produced a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Sailors in a pool-play game of the Segerstrom tournament Thursday.

Alex Morton had six points, 12 rebounds, three assists and five blocks for Newport Harbor (5-2).

The Sailors will face host Segerstrom today at 3 p.m. in a bronze bracket game.
