Mesa repeats as Mayors’ Cup winner
The Mayors’ Cup is an annual tournament featuring friendly competition among the three AYSO soccer regions of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
The two-day tournament culminates in a trophy and bragging rights for the next year. Each of the three regions sends their top two teams per division. These teams compete to determine one championship team per division (boys’ under 10, girls’ under 10, BU12, GU12, BU14 and GU14). The region with the most championship teams is declared winner of the Mayors’ Cup.
Rather than staying with the region, the trophy or cup is actually housed in the city hall of the winning region. If Corona del Mar (Region 57) is victorious, the trophy will stay at the Newport Beach City Hall for the next year. If Costa Mesa (Region 120) earns the most points, the trophy will stay at the Costa Mesa City Hall for the next year. Since the players in Newport Beach (Region 97) reside in both cities, if Region 97 prevails, the trophy spends half of the year at the Newport Beach City Hall and the other half of the year in the Costa Mesa City Hall. The fourth annual tournament was held Saturday and Sunday. Costa Mesa won the Mayors’ Cup. Costa Mesa, region 120, repeated its victory of 2009 with three championship teams in boys’ under 12, boys’ under 14 and girls’ under 14.
Region 97, Newport Beach, had two championship teams and Region 57, Corona del Mar, had one championship team.
The teams are divided into six divisions and placed into two pools of three teams within each division. Each team played two games on Saturday and the first- and second-place teams from each pool continued into Sunday play. The top two teams from each pool competed in semifinal cross pool play on Sunday morning. The two semifinal winners competed Sunday afternoon to establish a champion for that division.
Once the final Mayors’ Cup game is played, the winning region is determined. Six total points are available as one point is awarded for each divisional championship (BU10, GU10, BU12, GU12, BU14, GU14). If no region has won the majority of points, second-place finishes are used as a tie breaker.

Muchnick a champ
Justin Muchnick of the Corona del Mar Sharks Wrestling Club took first place in the 98-pound weight class of the California Age Group Wrestling Assn. Tournament at Santa Fe Springs High this past weekend.
After two pins and a close 5-4 win, Muchnick won a grueling championship match by pinning his opponent in the third period. Muchnick, a seventh grader at Harbor Day School, has wrestled with the CdM Sharks for the past year, training every Saturday at CdM High with Sharks coaches Mitch Wexler and Ric Camarillo.

Lincoln wins title
Lincoln Elementary’s fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ flag football team from Corona del Mar will take to the playing field over the winter break for the second year in a row.
After a winning fall season (11-1), the Lincoln team captured the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation Orange County Division B title, as it won the Orange County SCMAF tournament.
Lincoln earned a 14-12 victory over Newport Coast Elementary in the championship game Saturday.
Representing the City of Newport Beach and Orange County, both the Lincoln and the Newport Coast teams will travel to Fontana to compete in the SCMAF Championship Tournament, scheduled to take place Dec. 18-19.
A roster of 16 flag football teams from around Southern California are set to compete in the B Division of the double elimination championship tournament.
The Lincoln team is coached by Floyd “Buck” Schwartz and Kevin Murphy. Team members include Barron Campbell, Sean Feibleman, J.P. Fenmore, Jake Jarvis, J.T. Murphy, Sam Neiger, Jake Pearson, Hunter Rener, Cole Samuels, J.T. Schwartz, Billy Shaw, Nick Smith, Grant Shaw and Ryan Wessler.
The Youth Flag Football League is organized and run by the City of Newport Beach Recreation & Senior Services Department.

Big win for Irish
The Newport-Mesa Irish seventh-grade All-Net basketball team opened the season with a 72-57 win over the Laguna Beach Breakers.
Jack Van Dalsem led in scoring with 17 points followed by Robbie Hurst with 15 and Calvin Cho with 13. Kevin McCarthy and Ryan Cousens controlled the floor, while Ben Brooks under the basket had eight points with four rebounds. Stephen Von Der Ahe had 12 rebounds and scored eight.

Cats open with win
The Big Cats All-Net sixth-grade boys’ basketball team beat El Toro Chargers, 54-17, in its season opener.
The Big Cats earned the win courtesy of Chase Garbers, Collin Pipkin, Mitchell Haly, Steve Rodosky, Jacob Jones, Chase Furey, Matthew McDonald and Connor Kincaid. Mike Flamson coaches the team.
