High School Roundup: Sailors advances to semis at Coyote Classic

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 78, Santa Fe 47

BUENA PARK — Brian Robbs scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help lead the Sailors to the quarterfinal win in the Coyote Classic at Buena Park Thursday.

Nic Sargeant scored 16 points and Kevin Rakestraw had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Newport Harbor (3-0).

The Sailors play against Buena Park in a semifinal game Friday at 7 p.m. at Buena Park High.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Estancia 13, Rancho Alamitos 6

COSTA MESA — Danielle Ridge scored four goals for the Eagles in the nonleague game Thursday.

Ilene Umansky and Valerie Medina scored three goals each and Nikkie Blinn added two goals for Estancia (6-4). Goalie Alexis Paul made 13 saves for the Eagles, who play host to Westminster Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Peninsula 9, Costa Mesa 7

COSTA MESA — Alicia Rederscheid and Kellie Thorsness each had two goals in Thursday’s nonleague game.

Melissa Folkerts, Aubry Hill and Lauren Smith also scored for the Mustangs (4-4). Kaitlyn Hill had 13 saves for Mesa, which plays host to Orange Lutheran on Tuesday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, La Jolla 1

SAN DIEGO — Juniors Jayden Smith and Miranda Striver scored goals for the Sea Kings to open the Butch Lee Memorial Classic at Cathedral Catholic Thursday.

Seniors Alexa Mamatas and Annie Alvarado contributed an assist each for CdM (2-0), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Junior goalie Kendall Mulvaney made two saves in the first half and freshman Kat Hess had two saves in the second half for the Sea Kings.

CdM plays against Great Oak of Temecula in pool play Friday at 5 p.m. at Cathedral Catholic.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Gabrielino 56, Costa Mesa 44

ANAHEIM — Junior Danielle Obong had 15 points and five rebounds and senior Elizabeth Ford added 10 points and seven boards for the Mustangs in the Fairmont Prep Tournament on Thursday at Fairmont Prep.

Mesa fell to 4-3.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs defeated St. Margaret’s, 58-46, in the same tournament. In that game, Obong had 20 points and Ford added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Also against St. Margaret’s, junior Alex Loredo had seven steals, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Aubriona Mathis chipped in eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.

La Quinta 35, Newport Harbor 33 (OT)

ANAHEIM — Freshman McKenna Izzi scored 12 points to lead the Sailors in Loara Tournament pool play Thursday at Loara High.

Junior Bela Raimondi had five points and sophomore Jordan Perry, called up from the junior varsity on Wednesday, posted her four points in the second half to help the Tars rally from a nine-point second-half deficit and force overtime.

The Sailors (1-4) complete pool play on Friday against Irvine at 6:30 p.m. at Loara.
