Women’s soccer: Lions roll over Baker

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Junior forward Lindsey Davidson had two goals and one assist to lead the Vanguard University women’s soccer team to a 5-1 rout of Baker University of Kansas in the second round of the NAIA Tournament on Monday.

Senior Lindsey Holman-Kelly added two goals and senior Amanda Couch had three assists to help the No. 2-ranked Lions (18-2), the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Vanguard, which has won its last 14 contests, will play the winner of Tuesday’s second-round game between Kansas Wesleyan (21-1) and Spring Arbor of Michigan (20-2-1). It will be the Lions’ first trip to the NAIA quarterfinals.

Davidson, the team’s leading scorer, opened the scoring in the fourth minute and doubled the lead in the 22nd minute, both on assists by Couch. Davidson now has 18 goals to go with 10 assists.

Couch, who now leads the team with 14 assists, got another when she set up Holman-Kelly’s first goal in the 28th minute.

Holman-Kelly, who now has eight goals, scored again a minute later on an assist by Davidson.

Senior Lauren Skachenko capped the Vanguard scoring in the 44th minute, with an assist from senior Rachel Rucireta.

Vanguard’s 5-0 halftime lead upped its first-half season scoring advantage to 43-3. Coach Randy Dodge’s Lions have outscored opponents, 65-8, this season, including 47-3 during the winning streak.

Vanguard sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Terry made three saves before being relieved in the 64th minute.

Vanguard posted a 31-9 advantage in shots and had all of the game’s seven corner kicks.
