College Roundup: UCI grabs first win of season

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 69, Drake 64

Las Cruces, N.M. — Junior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had a career-high 23 points and added five assists and five rebounds to pace the host Anteaters in the New Mexico State tournament game Friday.

Sophomore Methlyn Onogomuho had 11 points and eight rebounds, while junior Jasmine Bernard had 10 points and eight boards and junior Lauren Spinazze chipped in 10 points for the winners (1-4).

Senior Pernilla Hanson had six points and a team-best nine rebounds for UCI, which shot a season-best 39.1% from the field (27 of 69).

An Onogomuho follow shot put UCI up, 67-64, with 12 seconds left and Hanson made two free throws after a Drake miss to ice the Anteaters’ first win of the season.

UCI posted a 44-43 rebounding advantage and had 14 turnovers, two fewer than the visitors.

Drake is 1-2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 75, Porterville 46

GLENDORA — Jordan Pellum had 13 points and five steals to pace Orange Coast in the opening round of the Citrus tournament on Friday at Citrus College.

John Joyce had 10 points as 17 Pirates scored.

Nathan Kirschbaum had five points, five rebounds and three steals for OCC.

OCC (2-2) forced 34 turnovers while committing 18 and the Pirates shot 44.4% from the field while holding Porterville (0-5) to 28.3% shooting.

Orange Coast returns to action against East Los Angeles in the tournament Saturday at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly SLO def. UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Ella Rosenfeld and Shannon Fleming each had nine kills to lead the visiting Anteaters, who were swept, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18, in the Big West Conference match Friday.

Rosenfeld, who had a team-best three block assists, hit .438. Fleming (two block assists), hit .318, but UCI, which fell to 11-21, 5-12 in conference, hit .121 as a team.

Cal Poly improved to 4-25, 3-14.
