Briefs: Locals in regionals

Sage Hill School, which won the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA championship on Saturday, tops three Newport-Mesa girls’ volleyball teams that will open play in the CIF State Southern California regionals on Tuesday night.

The Lightning (26-5) earned the No. 4 seed in the eight-team Division IV bracket and will play host to No. 5-seeded Viewpoint of Calabasas (21-5), which Sage defeated in the section semifinals, at 7.

CdM (31-4), which lost in the section Division I-A final on Saturday to Marymount, is the No. 5 seed in the Division I regional. The Sea Kings visit Torrey Pines (26-8) the San Diego Section Division I champion, at 7.

Newport Harbor, which fell to Sunset League rival Los Alamitos in the section Division I-AA final on Saturday, visits Clovis West (33-5) at 7.

Newport Harbor is the No. 6 seed in Division I regional. Clovis West is the No. 3 seed.

The second round in all divisions is scheduled for Saturday.

Anteaters battle Cal

The UC Irvine men’s water polo team is seeded No. 7 for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament that begins Friday.

The Anteaters (15-11, 2-6 in conference) meet No. 2-seeded Cal (20-3) at 11:30 a.m. at UCLA.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday and the winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAA championships.

UCI lost to Cal, 14-6, in their MPSF meeting at Cal on Oct. 30.

OCC visits Miramar

The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team visits Miramar on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regionals.

OCC (14-4-4), the No. 16 seed, upset top-seeded Cerritos, the No. 1 team in the nation, 1-0, in the first round.

Miramar is the No. 9 seed.

Pirates No. 9 seed

The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team plays host to San Diego Mesa on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regionals.

The Pirates (16-4) are the No. 8 seed, while the Olympians (17-5), are the No. 9 seed.

If victorious, OCC would likely meet top-seeded Los Angeles Pierce (27-0) in the second round on Saturday.
