College Roundup: OCC women open playoffs at home Tuesday

The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team will play host to Citrus College in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California Regional playoffs at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

OCC (18-2), the No. 4 seed, has lost two of its last four, while Citrus College (14-8) ended the reguar season on a three-match wining streak.

OCC, which finished second in the Orange Empire Conference, is led by sophomore outside hitter Karlee Riggs. Riggs, the OEC Player of the Year, leads the state in kills per game (5.28) and is tied for the team lead with 25 aces.

OCC has won 56 of its 65 games this season, including 16 sweeps.

Los Angeles Pierce (27-0) is the No. 1 seed in the SoCal bracket.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 64, Liberty 46

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Daman Starring scored 12 points to lead the Anteaters to the nonconference win in the Progressive Legends Classic Subregional Monday.

Chris McNealy added 10 points and Adam Folker finished with nine points for UCI (3-1).

Liberty is 0-4.

The Anteaters play against Southern Mississippi on Tuesday.

UCI’s Winkler breaks digs record

UC Irvine senior libero Kristin Winkler had 25 digs Saturday to become the Big West Conference career leader with 2,211.

Winkler surpassed Cami Croteau, who had 2,194 at Cal State Fullerton from 2007 to 2010.

UCI lost the Big West match to host Long Beach State, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20. The Anteaters, who have two matches remaining, are 11-20, 5-11 in conference.

Vanguard falls in playoffs

Vanguard University was defeated, 25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, by visiting Cal State San Marcos in the first round of the NAIA women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The No. 22-ranked Lions (17-15) were led by Rachel Barker, who had 14 kills, and Kelly Heenan, who had 22 digs.

No. 20-ranked Cal State San Marcos is 29-13

Vanguard loses only one senior, Candace Cedarstrom, to graduation from this year’s team.
