Men’s Basketball: UCI announces Nelson signing

Luke Nelson, a 6-foot-3 point guard from England, has signed a national letter of intent with the UC Irvine men’s basketball program, the school announced Tuesday

Nelson averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists to help lead the English U-18 team to a promotion to Division A last summer and earned all-tournament honors. As a member of the U-16 team in 2011, he averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in helping that English team to a promotion to Division A.

“I am excited to add Luke to our program, as this is the culmination of two years of recruiting him,” UCI Coach Russell Turner said. “We first saw Luke playing for the English U-16 team in Macedonia and I think he is the most proven of the players we have signed, which is saying a lot.

“He burst onto the scene with his performance in a Basketball Without Borders camp, where some guys I know from the NBA coached him and I know they are excited we were able to sign him,” Turner said.

Nelson joins recent early signees Mamadou Ndiaye and Giannis Dimakopoulos, 7-5 and 7-2 respectively.
