Lessons in playing college golf

UC Irvine men’s and women’s golf coaches Paul Smolinski and Julie Brooks will join other coaches and instructors to teach junior high and high school golfers at a camp Dec. 27-28 at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.

The camp is open to junior high and high school golfers.

It will include on-course instruction, tips on fitness and the mental game and insight into the college golf experience.

The goal of the camp is to educate players and their families on what it takes to play collegiate golf.

Newport Beach resident Eric Lohman, Oak Creek’s director of golf, and Glenn Deck, instruction director at Oak Creek and Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Coast, are among the instructors.

The camp costs $275 per player and includes video evaluation, lunch both days and a tee prize. The camp runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Former USC and Southern Methodist coach Ted Gleason is scheduled to have lunch with the players on the second day.

*Corona del Mar High junior Mike Moorhead finished in a four-way tie for seventh (seven-over par) among 63 golfers at a Toyota Tour Cup event Nov. 6-7 at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa Barbara.

Moorhead (77-72 – 149) birdied four holes on the back nine in the second round to place six shots back of winner Robin Kang (78-65 – 143) of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Estancia junior Jake Knapp (74-80 – 154) finished in a three-way tie for 17th.

The Toyota Tour Cup season culminates with the tour championship Dec. 21-23 at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

The top 54 boys in points will earn invitations.
