College Roundup: ‘Eaters claim NCAA opener

IRVINE — Sophomore midfielder Devon Delarosa scored twice, both on assissts from senior Tanya Taylor, to help the Anteaters rally to win the program’s NCAA Tournament debut Friday at Anteater Stadium.

Delarosa pulled the hosts (18-2-2) even in the 72nd minute on a rebound off the post. She then banged in a header off a Taylor cross in the 74th minute to send the ‘Eaters into the second round.

UCI will play host to Wake Forest (13-7-3) on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Demon Deacons topped San Diego, 1-0, in a first-round clash Friday.

Senior Danielle de Seriere had four saves for UCI, which posted a 13-9 edge in shots.

Orange Coast 2, Golden West 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Pirates ended their regular season 13-6-2, 11-4 in the Orange Empire Conference.

FULLERTON — The Pirates knocked the Hornets out of first place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 21-25, 25-21, 32-34, 25-18, 15-7 win Friday.

OCC is 14-5, 9-4 in conference. Fullerton is 10-3 in conference.

Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine

FULLERTON — Julianne Piggott led the Anteaters with eight kills, as the Titans won, 25-9, 25-22, 25-19, in a Big West Conference match Friday.

Kristin Winkler had 16 digs for UCI (6-20, 2-11 in conference), which was swept by Fullerton (23-5, 11-2) for the first time since 2006.
