Briefs: Former Sailor lauded

Newport Harbor High product Elizabeth Eddy, a sophomore at USC, has been named second-team All-Pac-12 Conference in women’s soccer.

Eddy, a forward, had four goals, two of which were game-winners, and two assists for the Women of Troy, who went 7-13, 4-7 in conference.

Eddy scored a team-best seven goals in 2010, when she made the conference All-Freshman Team.

‘Eaters’ Fontein shines

UC Irvine senior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein was named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Fontein had five saves in a 1-0 victory at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Nov. 1. The win, his eighth shutout of the season and the 28th of his career, helped UCI earn its second regular-season conference championship and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

The win at Cal Poly gave Fontein 14 for the season, tying his own school single-season record.

UCI’s Baxter honored

UC Irvine senior driver Trent Baxter has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s water polo.

Baxter scored a career-high six goals in a 13-12, MPSF win over Long Beach State on Thursday night. He scored his last goal of the evening with 7:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the ‘Eaters a 12-9 cushion in the “Black & Blue rivalry clash with the 49ers.

Baxter, who added a goal in a loss to No. 4-ranked Stanford on Sunday, has 44 goals on the season and ranks ninth in the MPSF with an average of 1.83 goals per game.

Lions’ Heenan lauded

Vanguard University senior Jamie Heenan has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women’s volleyball.

The 5-foot-10 outside hitter out of Newport Harbor High led the No. 13-ranked Lions to a split in conference play. She had 17 kills, seven digs and six aces in the Lions’ four-game home loss to No. 7-ranked Azusa Pacific on Nov. 1.

Heenan collected 13 kills, nine digs, three aces and three blocks in a 25-15, 25-19, 15-18 home win over No. 9-ranked Fresno Pacific on Saturday.

Heenan averaged 4.29 kills and 2.29 digs per set in the two matches, after which the Lions were 21-10, 10-6 in conference play.
