Briefs: Nelson picks UCI

Luke Nelson, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Great Britain, has verbally committed to play for the UC Irvine men’s basketball program.

Nelson, who helped the Worthing Thunder to the 2011 under-18 national championship, averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists for England’s U18 national team last summer.

Nelson, who turned 17 in June, represented Great Britain in the U16 European Championships in 2011.

He told Hoopsfix.com that he chose UCI after also receiving recruiting interest from Davidson, Utah, Idaho State, Hawaii and Elon.

Players can sign a national letter of intent beginning Nov. 14.

Coaches are prohibited from commenting on recruits before they sign a letter of intent.

Luke receives honor

Corona del Mar High product Lindsay Lindsey Luke, a goalkeeper at the University of Utah, was named to the Pac-12 Conference All-Freshman team in women’s soccer.

Luke, a redshirt freshman who sat out last season at Wake Forest, had 85 saves and allowed 20 goals in 17 games, including 16 starts, for the Utes, who finished 8-3-3, 3-7-1 in conference.

Luke was a part of five shutouts and posted a goals-against average of 1.12.

“Lindsey had a fantastic freshman season, Utah Coach Rich Manning said in a statement. “Her shot-stopping and distribution skills were key in helping us improve our team defense. Lindsey played beyond her years and is well-deserving of this honor.”

Zepfel lauded again

Corona del Mar High product Ben Zepfel, now competing for Harvard, was named Northern Division Rookie of the Week for the third time this season by the Collegiate Water Polo Assn.

Zepfel, who leads the Crimson with 70 goals and is third on the team with 34 steals, helped Harvard qualify for the CWPA Eastern Division Championships by finishing fourth in the Northern Championship completed Sunday.

Zepfel had 10 goals and seven steals in three games, including a 10-8 win over Fordham on Saturday.

He had four goals and three steals in a 17-14 loss to No. 15-ranked St. Francis, after posting three goals and three assists against Fordham.

In the third-place game against MIT on Sunday, he produced three goals and one steal in the 15-14 setback.

Harvard is 10-20, 5-9 in conference.
