High School Roundup: CdM volleyball to play at home

The Corona del Mar High girls’ volleyball team won the coin flip and will play host to Marlborough in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m.

CdM (28-3), the No. 2 seed, swept Brea Olinda in the first round. Marlborough beat visiting Arroyo Grande, 25-19, 11-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14.

Newport Harbor (22-8) will play host to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the CIF Division 1-AA second round Thursday at 7 p.m.

Sage Hill won a coin flip and will play host to Desert Hot Springs in the CIF Division IV-AA second round Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Lightning (14-3) swept in the first round at home against Chino.

Estancia lost on the road to No. 4- seeded Vista Murrieta, 25-18, 25-13, 25-8, in the first round Tuesday. The Eagles end their season at 7-13.

Local girls’ tennis teams open the CIF Southern Section playoffs Thursday.

Newport Harbor (16-1), the Sunset League champion, plays host to Chaparral of Temecula (9-8) in Division II at 2 p.m.

In Division I, Costa Mesa (6-4) plays at Santa Margarita (8-9) at 2 p.m.

Sage Hill (13-4) plays host to Yucaipa (12-3) in Division III at The Tennis Club Newport Beach at 2 p.m.

In boys’ water polo, top-seeded Corona del Mar (21-6) plays host to Great Oak of Temecula (16-13) in the CIF Southern Section Division II second round Thursday at 5 p.m.

Great Oak beat Long Beach Poly, 9-8, in the first round Tuesday, while the Sea Kings had a bye.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sea Kings improved to 4-2 in the Sea View League after the win Wednesday at Goldenwest Street.

The team was bolstered by great performances from Shane McGilfrey, Jason Crane, Trey Wood, Jon Duncan, Finn Kallal and Julia Corders (who continued her streak of all first-place finishes in short boarding.)
