College Roundup: OCC’s MacArthur scores four goals

COSTA MESA — Sarah MacArthur scored four goals to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match that ended the regular season Friday.

MacArthur now has 15 goals on the season, second only to teammate Sara Gomez among Pirates.

With its sixth straight win, OCC improves to 17-3, 12-3 in conference. The Pirates have outscored opponents, 78-9, this season.

OCC will await word on whether it receives a postseason berth.

CYPRESS — Baji Chela scored two goals to pace the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match that ended the regular season Friday.

OCC is 11-5-4, 7-4-3 in conference.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Karlee Riggs had 15 kills to lead the host Pirates’ 25-23, 25-18, 26-24 Orange Empire Conference sweep Friday.

Allison Lumsden had 35 kills and Andi Frisina had 28 digs for OCC (18-1, 12-1 in conference).

Cypress is 9-10, 8-5.

OCC will play host to Golden West in a showdown for the OEC title on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Westminster 77, Vanguard 56

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Lions suffered their first defeat of the season in the opening round of the Las Vegas Classic at Durango High on Friday.

The Lions are 2-1, while No. 13-ranked Westminster, based in Utah, is 4-0.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Santa Clara 77, UC Irvine 54

SANTA CLARA — Junior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had 17 points, while sophomore forward Camille Buckley had 14 points and nine rebounds for the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference season opener Friday.

Tsurumoto made three of five three-point attempts for UCI, which shot 28.8% from the field.

Santa Clara made 28 of 55 field-goal attempts (50.9%) and won the turnover battle, 20-12.

Sophomore Methlyn Onomoguho had five points and seven rebounds to help UCI post a 41-32 edge on the glass.

CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA West Regional

SEATTLE — UC Irvine senior Rex Nelson finished 58th in the men’s race and UCI sophomore Colleen Lillig was 85th in the women’s race at Jefferson Park Gold Course on Friday.

The UCI men finished 17th and the UCI women were 22nd to see their seasons come to an end.

Nelson, a Newport Harbor High product, covered the 10,000-meter course in 30 minutes, 40 seconds.

Alex Tebbe (70th in 30:56) and Sam Hyams (91st in 31:17) also cracked the men’s top 100 for the Anteaters.

Lillig completed the 6,000-meter course in 21:25.

UCI’s Chloe Fata was 123rd in 21:57.
