LOS ANGELES — Chelsea Alfafara was the lone Lions scorer in double figures with 10 points in the exhibition game Monday at Pauley Pavilion.

Alfafara had six rebounds to share team-high honors with Molly Pfohl, while Veronica Beavor scored all nine of her points on three-pointers for Vanguard, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA.

Senior point guard Sarah Boyd had four assists and five rebounds, but also had seven of the visitors’ 29 turnovers.

IRVINE — Bo Rael scored on a header off a corner kick in the 53rd minute to give the 49ers the Big West Tournament title Sunday.

UCI had 11 of the game’s 16 shots, including one by Nikki Forrest that diving Long Beach goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough got a finger on to deflect it off a goal post.

The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak and a 17-match unbeaten skein for the No. 7-ranked Anteaters (17-2-2), whose last loss had been Aug. 29.

The 49ers are 14-5-2.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Stanford 7, UC Irvine 2

STANFORD — The host No. 4-ranked Cardinal built leads of 6-0 and 7-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Sunday.

Tom Kruip and Doug Lindsey had goals for the No. 5-ranked Anteaters (15-6, 3-3 in conference).

Stanford, guided by Ex-Corona del Mar High coach John Vargas, is 12-5, 4-1.
