NEWPORT COAST — Maddy Abbott had 43 assists, four kills and nine digs to help lead the No. 3-seeded Lightning to a 25-10, 25-18, 25-11 win in a CIF Southern Section Division 3-A second-round match Thursday.

Maggie Danner had 14 kills and two aces and Kekai Whitford had six kills and 13 digs for Sage Hill (24-6), which plays in Saturday’s quarterfinals against either La Sierra or Northwood.

REDONDO BEACH — Torey Thompson had 30 assists and six digs for the Sailors, who saw their season end in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 second-round setback against the top-seeded team in the CIF Southern Section Divison 1-AA playoffs Thursday.

Carolyn Bockrath (nine kills), Leah Castillo (eight kills), Sierra Brown (seven kills and five digs), Hunter Jennings (seven digs), Logan Grove (one ace) also contributed for the Sailors (20-11).

“Overall I’m proud of the girls,” Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said. “I’m very disapppointed in losing in the second round. We came on the road, we had to play error-free and we couldn’t do that tonight.”

CIF Regional State Qualifier

MURRIETA — Corona del Mar High freshman Amy Matsuoka ended her season with asix-over-par 78 at The Golf Club at Rancho California on Thursday.

The qualifying cut was 72 and nine individuals qualified, including the winner, Canyon’s Jessica Vasilic, who shot 66.

“[Matsuoka] gave it a valiant try but her putter didn’t seem to be working for her today,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said. “She had a great freshman year.”

CIF playoffs

Corona del Mar High will play host to Newport Harbor in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal match Saturday at 5 p.m.

The teams have split this season.
