College Roundup: Lions advance to final

COSTA MESA — The top-seeded Vanguard men’s soccer team scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 win over Biola and advance to the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Saturday.

Kevin Cornwall scored in the fifth minute off an assist from Alejandro Lopez. In the 67th minute, William Pellow scored an unassisted goal.

Lions goalkeeper Trevor Herrera made three saves to earn the shutout.

Vanguard (12-7), ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, will play host to No. 3-seeded Azusa Pacific Saturday at a time to be determined.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE — Kari Pestolesi had 14 kills to led the Anteaters to a 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14 Big West Conference win Saturday.

Shannon Fleming had nine kills, Mary Carls led UCI (6-19, 2-10 in conference) with 37 assists and Kristin Winkler led the ‘Eaters with 17 digs.

Juliane Piggot had nine digs for UCI.

Stanford 116, Vanguard 65

STANFORD — Ariel Castillo led the Lions with 20 points in the exhibition game Saturday.

Sarah Boyd had 10 points and 11 assists, while Molly Pfohl scored nine points for Vanguard.
