Attaway earns academic honor

UC Irvine men’s soccer player Corey Attaway was named to the ESPN Academic All-District 8 first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Attaway, a criminology, law and society major, has helped the Anteaters to a 14-2-3 record and No. 7 ranking in the country. The defender is fourth among the UCI leaders in points with 11 and has scored five goals and two assists.

Defensively, he has anchored an Anteater defense that has registered a single-season mark of 11 shutouts and the team is currently ranked fourth in the nation in shutout percentage at 0.65. UCI is ranked No. 1 in the West region and won the Big West Conference regular-season title.

Attaway, who owns a 3.65 GPA, will now be considered for inclusion on the Academic All-America team, which is due to be announced Nov. 16.

He is the lone Big West representative to be recognized this season.
