College Roundup: Lions move into semis

COSTA MESA — Alejandro Lopez scored in the 85th minute as the Vanguard University men’s soccer team defeated Concordia, 3-2, on Wednesday in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

Lopez’s goal came on an assist from William Pellow. Tomislav Colic and Landon Herrera scored in the first half for the top-seeded Lions (11-7), who lost a 2-0 halftime lead before Lopez’s goal. Concordia was the No. 8 seed.

Vanguard, the GSAC regular-season champion, hosts No. 5-seeded Biola on Saturday in a GSAC tournament semifinal. Game time is to be determined.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Northridge 2, UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — Sophomore Zach Olow scored for the No. 7-ranked Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Wednesday.

The Matadors scored the game-winning goal in the final minute.

Joel Bagby had an assist and Junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein had five saves for UCI (13-1-3, 6-0-2 in conference).

The Anteaters close out the regular season Saturday as they travel cross-county to face Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. at Titan Stadium. UCI can clinch the Big West regular season title with a victory over the Titans.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Santa Ana

COSTA MESA – Maddie Baird recorded 11 kills as the Pirates swept, 25-13, 25-22, 25-13, in an Orange Empire Conference match Wednesday night.

Aimee Melone had nine kills for OCC (11-5, 6-4 in conference).
