High School Roundup: Sailors, Sage advance

NEWPORT BEACH — The senior doubles teams of Megan Bathen and Kaitlyn Cosenza, as well as Kelsey Christensen and Lexi DeSantis, each swept to lead the Newport Harbor High girls’ tennis team to a 14-4 win over Louisville in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round playoff match Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

Kate Knight, McKenna Johnson and Baylee Bakkila each won two of three singles sets for the Sailors (15-5).

Newport Harbor won the coin flip and will play host to No. 2-seeded Dana Hills at 2 p.m. Friday in the second round.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 11, Villa Park 7

NEWPORT BEACH —Seniors Kimberly Brown and Molly Wang swept at No. 2 doubles, losing only one game, for the Lightning in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 first-round playoff match Wednesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Senior Lauren Hsu and freshmen Jaclyn Gerschultz along with the No. 3 doubles team of sophomores Amira Tarsadia and Natalie Meltzer each took two of three sets for the Lightning (9-8).

Senior No. 1 singles player Liana Korber and freshman No. 2 Celine Wang both won two of three for Sage Hill, which plays Friday against the winner of Westridge-St. Lucy’s.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Coast League finals

SANTA ANA — Senior Dakota Alford finished fourth in 15 minutes, 43.89 seconds to lead Costa Mesa to a third-place finish with 67 points on the three-mile course at Centennial Park Wednesday.

The Mustangs qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries Nov. 10 at Mt. San Antonio College. It is the first time they have qualified since 1997, Costa Mesa Coach Steve Moreno said.

Junior Brett Bermudez finished sixth in 15:47.92, senior Jorge Jeronimo was 11th in 16:14.03, sophomore Anuare Magana was 15th in 16:24.35 and junior David Alcala was 33rd in 18:15.08 for the Mustangs.

Estancia finished fifth out of five teams with 122 points. Senior Hector Rosete led the Eagles, finishing 16th in 16:27.01. He was followed by sophomore Juan Alvarado (25th, 17:26.84), senior Matt Thomas (27th, 17:30.64), senior Ricky Negrete (28th, 17:43.12) and sophomore Louis Garcia (30th, 18:04.25).

Godinez won the meet with 31 points, led by individual champion Jose Penaloza, a senior who finished in 14:50.34.

Saddleback was second with 63 points and Laguna Beach was fourth with 72.

Academy League finals

ORANGE — Freshman Cameron Knollenberg finished 12th on the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 57 seconds to lead Sage Hill to a third-place finish with 83 points at Irvine Regional Park Wednesday.

The Lightning advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 5 preliminaries Nov. 10 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Senior Ryan Fishel (15th, 17:07) senior Chris Andras (16th, 17:10), sophomore Patrick Hynes (18th, 17:25) and senior Brennan Hicks (22nd, 17:38) also contributed for Sage Hill.

St. Margaret’s won the meet with 33 points, Crean Lutheran (35) was second, Oxford Academy was fourth (87), followed by Whitney (132) and Brethren Christian (180).

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Academy League finals

ORANGE — Senior Sophia Witte finished fifth on the three-mile course in 20 minutes, 13 seconds to lead Sage Hill to second place with 57 points at Irvine Regional Park Wednesday.

It was Witte’s fourth straight top-five finish at the league finals. The Lightning advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 5 preliminaries Nov. 10 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Senior Lili Mora finished sixth in 20:17, sophomore Brittany Andressoo came in seventh in 20:22, sophomore Rebecca Fudge was 19th in 22:06 and sophomore Claire Goul was 20th in 22:07.

Lauren Maurer won the meet in 17:54 and led Crean Lutheran to first place with 25 points. Oxford Academy (74 points) came in third, followed by Whitney (103), St. Margaret’s (113) and Brethren Christian (183).

Orange Coast League finals

SANTA ANA — Estancia finished fifth with 122 points and Costa Mesa was sixth out of six teams with 177 points on the three-mile course at Centennial Park Wednesday.

Junior Brenda Vargas led the Eagles, finishing 17th in 20 minutes, 25.89 seconds. She was followed by teammates junior Melissa Hernandez (20th, 21:13.16), freshman Viridiana Rios (23rd, 21:26.62), junior Jackie Puentes (29th, 22:17.77) and sophomore Wendy De la Rosa (33rd, 22:38.34).

Junior Jocelyn Gutierrez led the Mustangs, finishing 30th in 22:19.97. She was followed by teammates junior Daysi Vazquez (32nd, 22:22.44), sophomore Tania Jaramillo (37th, 23:38.59), junior Yesenia Ramirez (38th, 23:49.07) and sophomore Jeirany Chavez (40th, 24:17.22).

Calvary Chapel junior Bethany Riley won the meet in 18:36.42. Laguna Beach came in first as a team with 35 points, followed by Godinez (39), Calvary Chapel (69) and Saddleback (115).

FIELD HOCKEY

Glendora 3, Newport Harbor 1 (penalty strokes)

GLENDORA — The Sailors, who had won the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions four straight years, were ousted in the first round Monday.

Kirsten Rohan scored for Newport Harbor (14-5-3) during regulation, which ended in a 1-1 tie. After a scoreless overtime, the game was decided on a penalty-stroke shootout.

Jordan Blanchfield scored during the penalty-stroke session for the Sailors, who finished third in the Sunset League at 6-3-1.

Newport Harbor goalie Cailynn Smethurst had a standout game, Sailors Coach Amanda Boyer said.
