Girls’ Golf: Local trio in CIF section final

For Corona del Mar High’s Amy Matsuoka and Newport Harbor’s Grace Ferrell, youth hasn’t impeded them on the golf course.

Experience has been on Estancia Cassie Stevenson’s side.

The three local golfers look to continue their impressive postseason runs. They are competing in the CIF Southern Section Individual Final at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills on Thursday. Tee time is at 9 a.m.

Ferrell, a freshman, is coming off a five-over-par 79 performance, tying her for 25th place with two other players at last week’s CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional at Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach.

Stevenson, a senior, fired an 81 at the tournament, good enough to share the 29th spot with seven others. Matsuoka, a freshman, finished with an 82, placing her 37th with seven others.

Ferrell, Matsuoka and Stevenson will each try to advance to the CIF Regional State Qualifier at the Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta on Nov. 8. The tournament is the precursor to the CIF State Championship at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga on Nov. 13.

Another good round of golf Thursday and the local trio can continue playing deep into the playoffs.

The three girls finished among the top 51 out of 109 players last week. Matsuoka, who finished third in the Pacific Coast League finals, came in just under the cut, which was 83.

Ferrell finished tied for third at the Sunset League finals to advance to Recreation last week. Stevenson, who plans to play at Cal State San Marcos, was second in the Orange Coast League finals prior to advancing at last week’s event.
