MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 4, Westmont 0

SANTA BARBARA — Sophomore Kevin Cornwall scored two goals to lead the Lions, who clinched their first outright Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season championship in the regular-season finale Saturday at Westmont.

No. 18-ranked Vanguard (10-7, 9-1 in conference) got some help when No. 8-ranked Cal Baptist, 8-1 in conference coming in, lost, 2-1, Saturday to Concordia.

The victory gives Vanguard the No. 1 seed in the eight-team conference tournament that begins Wednesday.

Vanguard’s only other GSAC regular-season title was a co-championship in 2004.

Cornwall’s two goals, in the 27th and 68th minutes, give him a team-best 13 for the season.

Seniors Victor Tapia and Tomislav Colic both added goals, while senior Trevor Herrera had three saves for his sixth shutout of the season.

Vanguard, which announced on Oct. 6 that it had forfeited five nonconference wins and one tie due to the use of an ineligible player, has won seven straight since a 1-0 loss at Cal Baptist on Oct. 5.The Lions were ranked No. 5 in the NAIA before announcing the forfeits.

Coach Randy Dodge’s Lions have outscored teams, 16-1, during the winning streak and outscored foes, 25-5, in GSAC play and 48-11 this season.

Alejandro Lopez and Kyle O’Brien had assists for Vanguard, which has eight shutouts this season.

Westmont fell to 7-7-3, 4-5-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

Big West Championship

RIVERSIDE — The UC Irvine men’s and women’s cross country teams finished sixth in the Big West Conference Championship Saturday at UC Riverside.

UCI senior Colin Hacker was seventh in the men’s race to earn all-conference honors, finishing the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 31.7 seconds.

Colleen Lillig paced the Anteaters women, finishing 23rd over the 6,000-meter course in 21:29.5. She was the top freshman in the conference.

Brett Matejka (17th in 24:48.7) and Steven Melena (24th in 25:02.1) were also in the top 25 for the UCI men.

Katherine Nielsen (26th in 21:43.5), Melissa Mead, a Newport Harbor High product (33rd in 21:56.3), and Chloe Fata (34th in 21:57.1) were additional women’s contributors for UCI.

UC Davis won the men’s title and UC Santa Barbara captured the women’s crown.

Jon Peterson (UC Davis) was the men’s individual champion, while Amanda Moreno (UCSB) topped the women’s field.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Cal 18, UC Irvine 9

IRVINE — The No. 1-ranked Golden Bears avenged an earlier loss to the No. 5-ranked Anteaters in convincing fashion in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday at UCI.

Cal (14-2, 3-0 in conference) scored 11 straight goals at one point to build a 15-3 advantage.

UCI (15-5, 2-2), which defeated Cal, 9-8, in the SoCal Tournament on Oct. 2 at UCLA, received two goals apiece from Tom Kruip and Griffin Lerman.

Max Bergeson, a Corona del Mar High product, had one goal for Cal.

Matt Johnson had five saves for the ‘Eaters, who play host to Pacific in an MPSF game today at noon.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 1, Westmont 1

SANTA BARBARA — Senior Danielle Dintino scored in the 28th minute to allow the visiting Lions to erase a 1-0 deficit in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Vanguard (8-6-2, 2-5-3 in conference) finishes ninth in the 11-team GSAC and fails to get one of eight bids in the conference tournament.

Kristin Thuve had the assist for Vanguard, which had an 18-13 advantage in shots. Both teams failed to score in two overtime periods.

Paige Sikes had five saves for Vanguard.

Westmont is 7-7-3, 4-5-1.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 60, Westminster (Utah) 43

COSTA MESA — Senior guard Sarah Boyd had a game-high 14 points as the Lions won their season opener Saturday night at The Pit.

Freshman forward Angelica Sahagun added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Vanguard, which led, 37-21, at halftime and held the visitors to just 19.6% shooting for the game.

Senior center Molly Pfohl had eight points and seven rebounds for Vanguard, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament last year.

Michelle Pace had 12 points for Westminster (1-1).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Azusa Pacific def. Vanguard

COSTA MESA — The Lions were swept, 25-11, 25-11, 25-16, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at No. 8 Azusa Pacific.

Newport Harbor High product Jamie Heenan led Vanguard (13-12, 5-11 in conference) with nine kills.

Azusa Pacific is 24-5, 11-5.

IRVINE — Kari Pestolesi had 10 kills and 16 digs for the Anteaters, who lost, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16, in Big West Conference action Saturday.

Juliane Piggott had nine kills for UCI (5-19, 1-10 in conference). Mary Carls led the Anteaters with 26 assists.
