High School Roundup: Costa Mesa pulls off dramatic victory

COSTA MESA – The Costa Mesa High girls’ tennis team beat rival Estancia in dramatic fashion to set up a three-way tie in the Orange Coast League Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Costa Mesa won on games, 78-70, after the rivals tied, 9-9. The Mustangs are tied with Estancia and Calvary Chapel for second place, each with a 6-4 record in league. Costa Mesa Coach Jan Migaki said she did not know if there is a playoff to figure the order of finish in the Orange Coast League, but expects to find out today.

Costa Mesa No. 1 singles player Ellen Im and No. 3 Martina Go both won two out of three sets.

“We were pretty ecstatic,” Migaki said. “Most of our team is seniors so it was a good win.”

GIRLS’ TENNIS

University 9, Corona del Mar 9

(University wins on games, 71-67)

IRVINE — The Sea Kings’ streak of 11 straight Pacific Coast League titles came to a dramatic end Thursday at University High.

CdM was up in sets, 9-8, with one doubles set still on court. But University’s Elika Fateri and Daneille Pham pulled away from a 5-5 tie to defeat CdM’s Alison Ishii and Lauren Thaxter, 7-5, clinching the match and the outright league title for the Trojans.

“Everyone who has played for CdM in the past 11 years should be very proud of such a terrific run,” CdM Coach Brian Ricker said. “Eleven straight years in one of the toughest tennis leagues in the country was a great accomplishment.”

University (9-0 in league) beat CdM (13-5, 7-2 in league), 12-6, in the teams’ first league meeting.

Senior Lynda Xepoleas swept in singles Thursday for the Sea Kings and the doubles team of seniors Kalika Slevcove and Morgan McVey also swept.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Edison

NEWPORT BEACH – Cinnamon Sary had seven kills, six blocks and 14 assists to lead the Sailors to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 Sunset League win Thursday.

Maddy Brown 10 kills for Newport Harbor (16-9, 5-3 in league), which competes in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions today.

Corona del Mar def. Woodbridge

IRVINE – Morgan Boukather had nine kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-9 Pacific Coast League win Thursday.

Claire Ham had four blocks and Megan Griffin had 20 assists for CdM (17-4, 8-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I-A coaches’ poll.

The Sea Kings play in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions today.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 2, Fountain Valley 0

COSTA MESA – Sophie Evans and Stephanie Storch scored a goal each to help the Sailors clinch a share of the Sunset League title Thursday at Harper Park.

Newport Harbor (21-2, 9-1 in league) shares the league championship with Huntington Beach, a 5-0 winner over Marina. The Sailors split the league series with the Oilers

Newport Harbor Coach Amanda Boyer singled out the play of Taylor Cordeiro in the midfield and on attack.

The Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions begins Monday.

Newport Harbor will play host to an opponent to be determined.

GIRLS’ GOLF

South Coast Divisional

CHINO – Tiffany Su shot four-over-par 76 to help Corona del Mar High finish sixth out of 17 teams at El Prado Golf Course Thursday.

The Sea Kings shot 416, as Grace Kim shot 81, Kim Schmied carded an 83 and Caitlin Shinohara and Emily Turner had 88.
