College Roundup: Vanguard women’s soccer wins first GSAC regular-season title

COSTA MESA — Amanda Couch scored two goals to lead the No. 8-ranked Lions to the Golden State Athletic Conference win and their first GSAC regular-season title Saturday.

Jordan Davidson had one goal and an assist, while Rachel Rucireta contributed an assist for Vanguard (14-2-0, 10-0-0 in conference).

Goalie Lauren Terry had one save in her shutout.

No. 12-ranked Westmont is 12-4-1, 8-2.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Big West championship

RIVERSIDE — UC Irvine junior Steven Melena placed fourth to help the Anteaters finish third as a team, its best finish in six years, at UC Riverside on Saturday.

Melena completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 16.8 seconds to earn UCI’s top individual finish in 19 years. UCI’s Daniel Galindo was fourth at the 1993 conference finals.

Sophomore Alex Tebbe (11th in 24:36.7) senior Sam Hyams (15th in 24:52.2), senior Rex Nelson (23rd in 25:22.6) and junior Andrew Snyder (33rd in 25:50.4) also cracked the top 40 for UCI.

UCI’s 83 points were 58 behind repeat champion Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with UC Santa Barbara placing second (48).

Senior Nick Osborne (41st in 26:12.8), sophomore Amir Shirif (42nd in 26:15.7) and redshirt freshman Riley Martin (56th in 28:00.7) also competed for UCI, which is back in action Nov. 9 in the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.

Big West championship

RIVERSIDE — Sophomore Colleen Lillig was 28th individually to lead the Anteaters, who finished sixth as a team at UC Riverside on Saturday.

Lillig completed the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 25.8 seconds.

Senior Chloe Fata (34th in 21:45.3), sophomore Kaycee Holcomb (38th in 21:53.9), sophomore Camille Maron (42nd in 22:02.8), freshman Makenna McGrann (43rd in 22:03.9) and junior Carlotta Pham (46th in 22:07.5), also competed for UCI.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was the team champion, led by individual winner Laura Hollander (19:12.6).

UCI will compete at the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 9 at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Hawaii def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — Aly Squires had 14 kills and 18 digs for the Anteaters, but No. 9-ranked Hawaii won, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10, in a Big West Conference match Saturday night.

Marisa Bubica had 21 kills, Shannon Fleming had 12 kills, Kristin Winkler had 28 digs and Marissa Alvarez amassed 45 assists for UCI (10-15, 5-6 in conference).

Hawaii is 19-2, 12-0.

SANTA CLARITA — Jessica Neves led visiting Vanguard with 12 kills in the Lions’ 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 Golden State Athletic Conference loss Saturday.

Vanguard fell to 15-12, 5-5 in conference.

STANFORD — Pablo Carballo, Bojan Hrlec, Nick Pfeil and Mitch Wise scored for the No. 8-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday.

No. 4-ranked Stanford is 11-4, 3-2 in the MPSF.

UCI (14-7, 0-4) plays host to Cal Thursday at 7 p.m.

FULLERTON — The host Titans scored in the 83rd minute of the Big West Conference matchup on Saturday.

UCI (4-13-1, 1-7 in conference) posted a 15-10 edge in shots.

Fullerton is 7-10-1, 3-4-1.
