Lions picked second

The Vanguard University women’s basketball team, which has won or shared the Golden State Athletic Conference title seven of the last eight seasons, has been picked to finish second this season by GSAC Coaches.

Coach Russ Davis’ Lions, who shared the regular-season conference title with Azusa Pacific last season, then won the GSAC Tournament crown on their way to a 27-3 campaign, received just one of 11 first-place votes in the poll released Friday.

APU, which reached the NAIA Tournament title game last season, collected 10 first-place votes.

Biola, Point Loma Nazarene and The Master’s, respectively, rounded out the top five.

Vanguard opens its season Oct. 30 at home against Westminster of Utah.

The Vanguard men’s team, under first-year coach Rhett Soliday, was picked to finish ninth in the 11-team conference.

The Lions’ men totaled 32 points in the poll, better than San Diego Christian (26) and Hope International (12).

Azusa Pacific topped the men’s poll with 116 points and six first-place votes. Concordia was second with 115 points and five first-place votes.

The Vanguard men open Nov. 12 against Westminster in the Las Vegas Tournament.
