High School Roundup: Stevenson helps Estancia win league title

Orange Coast League Four-way

COSTA MESA — Estancia’s Cassie Stevenson shot a two-under-par 33 to earn medalist honors and help the Eagles clinch the Orange Coast League title Thursday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Estancia had the lowest score Thursday, 194, followed by Calvary Chapel (230), Laguna Beach (231) and Costa Mesa (293).

Stevenson was one of six Estancia girls who were among 12 to advance to the OCL finals Monday at Mesa Linda, where they will play 18 holes.

The top four move on to the CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional Oct. 24 at Recreation Golf Course in Long Beach.

Estancia’s Naomi Beth (35), Jennifer Torres (39), Denise Casillas (43), Jackie Tanner (44) and Judy Gonzalez (45) will play on Monday.

Costa Mesa’s Brittney Chatham and Arisa Joi both shot 55, their personal best, but did not advance.

Corona del Mar 213, Beckman 214

NEWPORT BEACH — Amy Matsuoka shot two-under-par 33 to earn medalist honors and help the Sea Kings move into a tie for third in the Pacific Coast League in the final regular-season match of the season Thursday at Newport Beach Country Club.

CdM (7-7, 5-5 in league) will play against the other third-place team, Northwood, at the PCL prelims, 18 holes, Tuesday at San Luis Rey Downs Country Club in Bonsall. The winner will advance to the CIF Southern Section Southern Division Team Championships Oct. 22 at Mile Square Golf Course.

The fourth-place team can petition to compete at a different division site.

The top 18 individuals from Tuesday advance to the league finals, and the top nine from that move on to the Southern Individual Regional Oct. 24 at Recreation Golf Course in Long Beach.

The Sea Kings, who were 0-6 last year and have improved by nearly 35 strokes from last season, lost to Northwood twice this season, in a tie (which went to the sixth player score) and by two strokes. CdM was without Emily Turner (sick) then.

Turner (42), Karlie Moses (43), Anne Kim (45) and Lauren Nakamura (50) also scored for the Sea Kings Thursday.

University won the PCL and Beckman finished second.

Marina 211, Newport Harbor 231

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sailors’ freshman Grace Ferrell shot two-over 37 to share medalist honors with Marina’s Haley Wian Thursday at Meadowlark Golf Club.

It was the seventh time this season Ferrell was a medalist.

Tara Hanna (41), Bowie Viloria (50), Christina Ferraro (51) and Hanna Perry (52) also scored for Newport Harbor (6-10, 2-6 in league).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Costa Mesa 17, Saddleback 1

SANTA ANA — Senior Catharine Debbas won all 18 games at No. 1 singles and Mirna Dahabreh won 18 of 19 at No. 2 singles to pace the visiting Mustangs in the Orange Coast League match Thursday.

Costa Mesa (6-8, 5-3 in league), contending for one of the league’s three guaranteed berths into the CIF Southern Section playoffs with two league matches remaining, has won three straight.

Newport Harbor 11, Marina 0 (called due to rain)

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Kate Knight (No. 1), McKenna Johnson (No. 2) and Baylee Bakkila (No. 3) each won two sets to help clinch the Sunset League match before it was called because of the rain Thursday.

Seniors Kelsey Christiansen and Lexy DiSantis won twice at No. 1 doubles and senior Megan Bathen and freshman Anna Burke won twice at No. 2 doubles for Newport Harbor (14-4, 8-1 in league) before the rain came.

The Sailors play host to Los Alamitos Monday.

COSTA MESA —Freshman Kinley Ohland swept at No. 1 singles for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League match Thursday.

Brooke Thomas and Serena Kao swept at No. 1 doubles for Estancia (7-8, 4-4 in league), which plays at Saddleback Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 13, Beckman 8

IRVINE — Armen Mavusi scored four goals for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Thursday.

Danny Marshall added three goals and Logan Piper had two goals for CdM (12-4, 5-0 in league).

Goalies Patrick McKenzie (three saves, two steals), Ryan Hamm (one save, one steal) and Daniel Wolski (three saves, one steal) anchored the Sea Kings’ defense.

Newport Harbor 1, Westminster 0

WESTMINSTER — Kirsten Rohan scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Thursday.

Newport Harbor (11-3-3, 3-2-1 in league) plays host to Edison on Tuesday.
