Briefs: DuFault joining Speraw

Former UC Irvine All-American Jordan DuFault has been named to the 11-man U.S. men’s volleyball roster for the Pan American Games.

DuFault, a two-time All-American for the Anteaters and a member of UCI’s 2009 national championship team, will be representing the U.S. for the first time in his career.

The U.S. team, coached by UCI head coach John Speraw, will travel to Guadalajara, Mexico to compete Oct. 24-29.

“I’m excited to work with Jordan again,” Speraw said. “He is familiar with the system we are putting in place and is one of the best bic hitters we’ve had at Irvine. His offensive skills can be utilized on this team.”

Held every four years in the year before the Olympic Games, the Pan American Games is the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.

The team will begin competition on Oct. 24 in Group B with Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico. Group A will include Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela.

UCI players honored

UC Irvine senior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein has been named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Fontein stopped 15 of 16 shots last week in victories at Cal State Fullerton (Wednesday) and at home against Cal State Northridge (Saturday).

Fontein, who last week became a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, posted his fifth shutout of the season, the 25th of his career, in a 2-0 Big West win against Northridge.

In a 2-1 triumph over Fullerton, the Titans’ lone tally was on an own-goal deflection.

Fontein ranks No. 1 in UCI career annals in wins (45), shutouts, minutes played and goals-against average.

Fans may vote on the Senior CLASS award through Nov. 14 at seniorclassaward.com.

UCI senior midfielder Jimmy Turner was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.

No. 7-ranked UCI (11-2, 3-1 in conference) visits UC Riverside on Wednesday and Creighton on Saturday.

UCI’s Privett lauded

UC Irvine freshman midfielder Cami Privett was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in women’s soccer after figuring into both goals in a pair of weekend conference wins.

Privett scored in a 1-0 triumph over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Sunday at home. She had the assist in a 1-0 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday.

She has two game-winning goals this season.
