Vanguard def. Fresno Pacific

FRESNO — The No. 22-ranked Lions upset the No. 6 Firebirds, 25-20, 25-16, 29-27, behind 16 kills and a .354 hitting perentage by KaUwila Lavea in the Golden State Athletic Conference clash Saturday.

It’s the first time Vanguard has beaten Fresno Pacific since 1993.

Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had 12 kills for the winners, who improved to 15-8, 4-4 in conference.

Heenan was one of three Lions with 10 digs, while Alexandra Leja had 20 assists.

Fresno Pacific is 10-5, 6-2.

UC Santa Barbara def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — Aly Squires had seven kills and 11 digs for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

UCSB (11-7, 4-1 in conference) won, 25-12, 25-23, 25-17. Kristin Winkler had 12 digs for UCI (6-10, 1-4).

Vanguard 2, Hope International 1 (2OT)

COSTA MESA — Amanda Couch scored in double overtime, in the 106th minute to lift the Lions to the Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Charlotte Wisniewski assisted. Gabriela Valles scored the game’s first goal to give the Lions (9-1-1, 1-1-1 in conference) the lead in the 60th minute. But Hope (4-6, 0-3) responded in the 61st minute.

Valles’ goal came on a penalty kick and was her ninth goal of the season.

Convergence Tournament

LA VERNE — UC Irvine head coach Marc Hunt earned his 100th career victory in the ‘Eaters’ 19-1 win over Occidental College Saturday.

Hunt, an All-American player at UCI in 1992 and 1993, reached the milestone win in his seventh season after replacing legendary coach Ted Newland in 2005.

Mitch Wise tied his career high with six goals as No. 7-ranked UCI improved to 12-6 overall. Max Parrague and Trent Baxter added three goals each.

Jacob Mourer and Blake Terry scored two goals apiece for the ‘Eaters, who outscored the Tigers, 10-0 in the second half.

Michael Bailey started in goal for UCI and had five saves in the first half, while Alex Kazmier recorded four stops in the second half.

Earlier Saturday at the Convergence Tournament, UCI defeated Whittier College, 21-4, as Alan Robertson, Wise and Baxter scored three goals each.

The ‘Eaters play host to No. 3 UCLA Sunday at noon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Pool.

Vanguard 3, Hope International 2

COSTA MESA — Kevin Cornwall scored in the 83rd minute to lead the Lions to the Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Nikola Ilich assisted on Cornwall’s fifth goal of the season. Ilich scored an unassisted goal in the seventh minute for a 1-0 lead and again in the 47th minute off an assist from Kyle O’Brien for a 2-1 lead.

Goalie Cody Adams had five saves for Vanguard (8-4, 2-1 in conference).

Hope is 3-5-1, 0-3.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Vanguard University freshman Cameron Barela finished 10th and Orange Coast College finished fourth, one spot ahead of the host Lions in the 8,000-meter event Saturday at Fairview Park.

Barela finished in 26 minutes, 23 seconds to top local finishers.

OCC was led by Ryan Shota (17th in 26:39), Michael Taylor (18th in 26:42), Matthew Bottomley (25th in 26:58), Dillon Scott (26th in 27:03) and Johnny Lezama (39th in 27:34).

Vanguard standouts also included Tyler Dutchover (24th in 26:55), Matt Johnson (28th in 27:06), Tyler Coley (41st in 27:38) and Chad Smith (46th in 27:47).

OCC had 117 points and Vanguard had 139. The Master’s (46) won the event.

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Orange Coast College sophomore Analicia Silva was ninth in 18 minutes, 34 seconds and Vanguard University senior Kim Jennings (12th in 18:38) highlighted locals competing Saturday at Fairview Park.

OCC was fifth with 110 points and Vanguard was seventh with 162 in the team standings after the 5,000-meter race.

OCC’s Camille Garcia (20th in 19:05) and Grace Handy-Adams (26th in 19:16) also stood out, as did Vanguard’s Marline Estell (23rd in 19:10).

Azusa Pacific was the team champion.

Triton Classic

LA JOLLA — UCI freshman Camille Maron led five Anteaters in the top 44 at UC San Diego on Saturday.

Maron finsihed the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 51.2 seconds to place 20th among 120 runners.

Emma Archuleta (27th in 24:06.4), Jewelz Andrews (35th in 24:19.2), Rosa Serna (40th in 24:25.7) and Gabbi White (44th in 24:28) also represented UCI.

UCI was sixth among 13 teams with 151 points. UCSD won with 38 points.
