Newport Harbor’s Teaupa, Siemonsma injury updates

Newport Harbor High lost both starting tailback Talalelei Teaupa and backup Chance Siemonsma to possible serious injuries in the Sailors’ 35-0 loss to Edison in a Sunset League football opener on Thursday.

Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley said both Teaupa and Siemonsma went to the hospital, but he said he didn’t want to speculate on their injuries. Teaupa was carted off the field late in the second quarter and Siemonsma left on a stretcher early in the fourth quarter.

Siemonsma suffered a severe concussion and he might have suffered a broken vertebrae, said Brianna Schwartz, Siemonsma’s sister. She added that Siemonsma went to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he got X-rays and CT scans done.

“Vision is blurry and his words are slurred. Waiting for results,” said Schwartz, whose brother was later released from the hospital and went home.

“Just got a text from my mom saying he’s not looking too good.”
