MEN’S WATER POLO

SoCal Tournament

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine senior Brandon Johnson scored four goals to pace the No. 5-ranked Anteaters to a 9-8 win over No. 3-ranked Cal in the quarterfinals Saturday to set up today’s semifinal showdown with host UCLA.

Johnson scored the game-winner on a power play with 44 seconds left to help UCI improve to 9-2.

Senior Griffin Lerman had two goals and senior goalie Matt Johnson had six saves against the Golden Bears (8-2).

Earlier, UCI defeated St. Francis, 12-7, behind five goals from Lerman and three from Doug Lindsey.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 1, Drake 1

DES MOINES, Iowa — Senior Gray Bailey opened the scoring in the 56th minute for the No. 9-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference road game Saturday.

Christian Hernandez posted the assist for UCI (8-1-2), for which Andrew Fontein had four saves.

Drake (4-5-1) scored the equalizer in the 58th minute.

UCI posted a 20-10 lead in shots and had 10 corner kicks to the hosts’ three.

Vanguard 4, Hope International 1

COSTA MESA — Kyle O’Brien and Kevin Cornwall each had one goal and one assist to pace the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Saturday.

Adam Holstein and Alejandro Lopez added goals for No. 5-ranked Vanguard (8-0-1, 3-0 in conference).

Trevor Herrera had four saves for the Lions.

Hope is 5-5, 0-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 1, Hope International 1 (2 OTs)

COSTA MESA — The Lions’ Danielle Dintino scored in the 46th minute of regulation to erase a 1-0 deficit and two overtime periods failed to produce a goal in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

No. 6-ranked Vanguard (7-1-3, 1-0-2 in conference) posted a 17-6 advantage in shots.

Chelsea Lesniak made two saves for the hosts.

Hope is 4-4-1, 0-2-1.

Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT — UC Irvine’s Sam Hyams finished fifth in 25 minutes, 52.7 seconds over the 8,000-meter course to help the Anteaters finish second in the 10-team field Saturday at Pomona College.

UCI’s 70 points trailed Cal State San Marcos by 34.

Nick Osborne (19th in 26:37.5), Tommy Newton-Neal (21st in 26:43.5), Ryan McMonigle (28th in 27:00.4), Andrew Snyder (42nd in 27:23.6), Alex Tebbe (47th in 27:37.8) and Eric Hansen (52nd in 27:42.1), also contributed for UCI.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT — UC Irvine’s Colleen Lillig placed fifth in 22 minutes, 33.8 seconds over the 6,000-meter course to help the Anteaters finish second in the 12-team field Saturday at Pomona College.

UCI’s 59 points were 30 behind Cal State San Marcos.

Katherine Nielsen (12th in 23:04.7), Carlotta Pham (13th in 23:07.6), Shelby Pock (16th in 23:16.0), Melissa Mead (17th in 23:20.5), Samia Sailinuu (22nd in 23:27.9) and Maggie Newton-Neal (23rd in 23:27.9) rounded out UCI’s top seven.

MEN’S GOLF

Cabo Intercollegiate

LOS CABOS, Mexico — UC Irvine senior Bryan Harris is the individual leader and the Anteaters are second as a team after Saturday’s first round at Querencia Golf Club.

Harris shot four-under-par 68 Saturday, to earn a one-shot lead.

UCI’s 295 team score is five strokes behind Houston in the 12-team event.

Sophomore Jerry He is eighth (73), to also pace UCI.

MEN’S TENNIS

All-American Tournament

TULSA, Okla. — Three UC Irvine players won matches in the pre-qualifying round at the Case Tennis Center on Saturday.

Junior Chris Kearney defeated Yannick Goosens of Cleveland State, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Steven Henderson beat Oregon’s Alex Rovello, 7-6 (6), 6-2 and junior Sam Gould topped Ugar Atalay from George Washington, 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Ryan Cheung lost, 7-5, 6-1 to Air Force’s Lucas Marin.

The three Anteaters will continue qualifying today. Gould will face UCLA’s Alex Brigham, Henderson will meet Virginia’s Justin Shane and Kearney will battle SMU’s Bryan Griffin.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Davis def. UC Irvine

DAVIS — Senior Juliane Piggott had 13 kills and 10 digs and hit .353 to lead the Anteaters in the Aggies’ 29-27, 25-17, 25-17 Big West Conference triumph Saturday.

Senior Kari Pestolesi had 10 kills and 10 digs for UCI (4-12, 0-4 in conference).

UC Davis is 12-4, 4-0.

Westmont def. Vanguard

SANTA BARBARA — KaUwila Lavea had 16 kills and Jamie Heenan had 12 kills and 20 digs for the Lions, who fell, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 31-29, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Alexandra Leja had 31 assists and Ariel Strickler chipped in 20 digs for Vanguard (10-7, 2-6 in conference).

Westmont is 9-8, 3-5.
