COSTA MESA — The Pirates rallied to win their Orange Empire Conference opener, 21-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-11, at home on Friday night.

Katie Bergen led the Pirates (6-1, 1-0 in conference) with 21 kills and 20 digs in a rematch of last year’s state championship match, also won by OCC.

Katherine Wichner had 20 kills and Cathleen Hopkins added 10.

Libero Maddie Baird had 34 digs and setter Kimya Jafroudi dished out a season-high 56 assists for the Pirates.

OCC rallied from a 7-1 fifth-set deficit to stun Cypress (5-3).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pacific def. UC Irvine

STOCKTON — Taylor Smith led the Anteaters with seven kills in the Big West Conference match Friday.

Pacific won, 25-16, 25-8, 25-16.

Kristin Winkler had 10 digs to lead UCI (4-11, 0-3 in conference).

Marissa Alvarez had 13 assists for the Anteaters.

Pacific improved to 9-5, 2-1.

COSTA MESA — Pirates goalie Nick Saire had five saves in the Orange Empire Conference scoreless draw Friday at OCC.

The Pirates are now 2-5-2, 0-1-1 in conference.
