Farrell South scored three goals, while Dan Stevens and Ryan Fowler added one goal each for Newport Harbor (8-1), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I. Senior goalie Koby Yokota had five saves and two steals.

Loyola of Los Angeles is ranked No. 4 in CIF Division I.

COSTA MESA — James Lewis scored five goals for the Mustangs in the nonleague game Friday.

Wyatt Ferris had four goals, Jamie Sacco scored one goal and goalie Mitchell Grandia made 11 saves for Costa Mesa (9-3).

CHICAGO — Newport Harbor opened the tournament with wins over Stagg, 25-11, 25-10, and Cary Grove, 25-8, 22-25, 25-23, both from Illinois, at Mother McAuley High Friday.

The Sailors (10-2), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA, play against Joliet in the gold division quarterfinals Saturday morning.

Claire Castillo led with six kills in the match against Stagg. Cinnamon Sary had four kills and four blocks, Kasey Thompson had four kills, Alex Holbrook had three kills, Torey Thompson had 18 assists and Caroline Bockrath had five blocks.

Kasey Thompson had 16 kills against Cary Grove, which won the tournament last year. Sary had 11 kills and three blocks, Holbrook had six kills, three blocks, while Castillo and Bockrath had five kills each. Torey Thompson had 36 assists and Tatum Norton had five digs.

NEWPORT COAST — Maggie Danner and Kekai Whitford had seven kills each for the Lightning in the Academy League opener Friday night.

Rival St. Margaret’s, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA, won, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Maddie Abbott had 10 digs and five aces, Whitford had three aces, Alayna Lewis had 24 assists and two kills and Allie Mowrey had four digs and one ace for Sage Hill (9-5), ranked No. 3 in CIF Division IV-AA.
