Briefs: Mesa pool set to open

The Costa Mesa High School Aquatics Center, which features a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool, will officially be unveiled during a grand opening ceremony Tuesday at 4 p.m.

A tentative opening date had been set for Nov. 1, but the construction crew finished the project ahead of schedule.

The aquatics complex also includes a classroom, a snack bar, as well as a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system. The pool has special touch pads for timing.

Measure F, the $282 million bond measure voters approved in 2006, helped the renovation, which cost $6.6 million, said Laura Boss, the district’s director of communications.

UCI’s Fontein honored

UC Irvine junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein was named Big West Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after posting a pair of shutouts in the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

Fontein, who has seven shutouts this season and a school-record 16 for his career, helped the Anteaters post 4-0 wins over Cal State Bakersfield (Friday) and UNLV (Sunday.

UCI, ranked No. 9 by College Soccer News, took a 7-1 record into its Big West opener Wednesday at home against UC Riverside.

It is the second time this season and the third time overall that Fontein has won the conference’s top defensive award.

Lions’ duo lauded

Senior Danielle Dintino and freshman Chelsea Lesniak were named Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively by the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Dentino, a forward, scored two goals in a pair of victories. She had one goal in a 5-0 nonconference win over Soka, then posted her team’s only tally in a 1-1 tie against then-No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific in the conference opener Saturday.

Dentino has a team-best seven goals for the Lions (6-1-2 through Monday), ranked No. 6 in the NAIA.

Lesniak, a goalkeeper, posted a shutout against Soka and made five saves at APU.
