Briefs: Titans to honor Mayne

Former Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College baseball standout has a big weekend ahead at Cal State Fullerton.

Brent Mayne, a product of Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College who played 15 seasons of major league baseball, will be inducted into the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Titan Student Union.

Mayne, a catcher, played two seasons at Fullerton, earning second-team All-American honors as a sophomore in 1988. He was a two-time first-team All-Big West Conference performer.

In 1988, he led the Titans with a .393 batting average with 22 doubles and 31 runs batted in. His 38-game hitting streak that season is a school record.

As a junior, Mayne hit .350 with five home runs and 34 RBIs.

He finished with a .363 career major league average. A first-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 1989, he also played for the New York Mets, Oakland, San Francisco, Colorado, Arizona and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Johnson captures Classic

COSTA MESA — Orange County native Steve Johnson defeated New Zealand’s Artem Sitak, 6-3, 6-3, in the final of the Costa Mesa Pro Classic Futures tournament at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Sunday.

Johnson, the No. 6 seed, battled flu-like symptoms in the morning before using his forehand to deliver winners against the fifth-seeded Sitak.

Hank Lloyd, the tournament director, said a ladies round robin last Friday netted $400, which will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

UCI’s Goodson honored

UC Irvine senior center back CoCo Goodson has been named Big West Conference Defender of the Week in women’s soccer.

Goodson, an All-American as a junior, helped the No. 23-ranked Anteaters earn nonconference victories over Portland (Thursday) and San Diego (Sunday).

She headed in a goal against visiting Portland with her only shot of the week and she netted the assist on the game-winnning goal at San Diego.

UCI, which claimed its first Big West Conference regular-season title in 2010, opens conference play Friday at UC Davis at 3 p.m.
