High School Roundup: Newport nearly reaches Dave Mohs final

Newport Harbor High (8-2) nearly reached the final, but lost to Edison in the semifinals, 16-25, 30-28, 15-10, Saturday at Edison.

Edison will play Los Alamitos in the final Monday at 7 p.m. at Edison.

Cinnamon Sary and Alex Holbrook (five blocks) had nine kills each against Edison. Claire Castillo had seven kills and Kasey Thompson (three blocks) had six kills, while Torey Thompson had 32 assists and three blocks and Tatum Norton had six digs.

Kasey Thompson had eight kills and four aces in the Sailors’ 25-10, 25-21 quarterfinal win over Mater Dei at Edison. Sary (six digs) and Holbrook had five kills each. Torey Thompson had 21 assists.

Kasey Thompson had 10 kills to help Newport to a 20-25, 25-20, 15-10 win over Palos Verdes to open bracket play at Edison. Torey Thompson had 30 assists and Sary had eight kills, while Castillo and Holbrook had six kills each. Norton had eight digs.

The Sailors opened with a 25-7, 24-26, 15-12 win over Harvard-Westlake to end pool play at Newport Harbor Saturday morning. Kasey Thompson had 11 kills, Holbrook and Caroline Bockrath had seven kills each and Torey Thompson had 24 assists.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

South Coast Tournament

NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar High finished sixth after falling in the fifth-place match to El Toro, 12-5, Saturday at Newport Harbor High.

Reid Chase, Ty Hack, Wes Sherburne, Jedd Thayer and Colby Watson each scored single goals for the Sea Kings (5-2). Senior goalie A.J. Santa Maria made 12 saves.

CdM defeated Laguna Beach, 7-5, in a fifth-place semifinal earlier Saturday behind two goals from Jake Wyatt. Charlie Howarth, Ari Marks, Kyle Trush, Ben Zepfel and Sherburne each scored a goal each.

The Sea Kings open Pacific Coast League play at Northwood on Thursday.

Grafton Weiss Memorial Tournament

CYPRESS — Costa Mesa finished fifth with a loss against Kennedy, 9-7, and a 15-7 win over La Quinta at Cypress Saturday.

Quinn Stone had three goals in the loss for Mesa (7-2).

Wyatt Ferris had five goals and six steals in the Mustangs’ win, while James Lewis had four goals, four assists and four steals and Mitchell Grandia had 10 saves.

Costa Mesa went four for five on the power play in its win.

The Mustangs play at Saddleback Wednesday to open Orange Coast League play.

CROSS COUNTRY

Brentwood Invitational

BRENTWOOD — Jack Percival (sixth), Dylan Thies (seventh), Brennan Hicks (ninth) and Chris Andras (10th) finished in the top 10 to lead Sage Hill to the boys’ title among 20 schools Saturday at the Brentwood School.

Percival finished in 16 minutes, 35 seconds, as did Thies. Hicks came in at 16:40 and Andras in 16:46.

On the girls’ side Sophia Witte came in 12th in 20:41 to help the Lightning finish eighth as a team.

Lancer Invitational

RIVERSIDE – Robert Blackwell finished fifth in 15 minutes, 2 seconds to help the Costa Mesa boys’ team finish sixth Saturday.

On the girls’ side, Jennifer Daley came in 34th in 19:52.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill Prep Classic

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill went undefeated in the five-team tournament to win its own event for the first time in six years Saturday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

Using the old college format of six singles and three doubles, with players allowed to play singles and doubles, Sage defeated Capo Valley Christian, 8-1.

Sage Hill’s Liana Korber, Katie Bick, and Rian Billingsley were named all-tournament.

The Lightning play host to Newport Harbor Monday at 4 p.m. at The Tennis Club.
