High School Roundup: Mesa rises to win

Share

COSTA MESA — Senior Jamie Sacco scored four goals to help lead the Costa Mesa High boys’ water polo team to an 11-5 nonleague win over visiting Westminster Tuesday.

The Mustangs’ victory proved impressive considering they were playing without their top two scorers, senior James Lewis, out with a hip injury, and junior Wyatt Farris, who was out because he served a one-game suspension for game misconduct during Costa Mesa’s 17-7 win over Savanna Sept. 12.

The Mustangs are hoping for the best with regard to Lewis, who will undergo an MRI next week, Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said.

“He might be out for the season,” Taylor said of Lewis. “We’re just hoping he is able to come back.”

With the Mustangs needing offensive help, freshmen Deighton Tachiki and Nick Lewis stepped up. Tachiki scored three goals and Lewis added two goals.

Senior goalie Mitchell Grandia made 15 saves to help keep Costa Mesa undefeated at 4-0.

“It was nice to see the freshmen step up and fill that scoring role needed,” Taylor said. “The two kids we had out, they average five goals a game. They have a lot of firepower. It was nice to see the younger kids step up and play.”

The Mustangs return to action Thursday at Magnolia.
