Briefs: Axelrod shines

Former UC Irvine baseball pitcher Dylan Axelrod allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eigth strikeouts over six innings for the Chicago White Sox, but earned a no-decision in a 6-5 home loss to Detriot in 10 innings on Wednesday.

Axelrod, making his major league starting debut, left the game with a 5-2 lead.

He is the first former UCI pitcher to start a major league game since Doug Linton in 1999.

Baldoni helps Team USA into quarters

TRIESTE, Italy — Corona del Mar High product Kate Baldoni shined as the United States women’s junior national water polo team advanced to the quarterfinals of the FINA Junior World Championships on Wednesday after defeating Germany, 25-2.

Baldoni, who helped lead Stanford to the NCAA title last spring, had nine saves in goal. That included a save on a five-meter penalty shot.

Team USA plays Hungary in a quarterfinal Thursday.
