Invitational

CLEVELAND — UC Irvine lost to Cleveland State, 25-19, 20-25, 28-26, 16-25, 15-12, on Saturday after it topped High Point, 25-15, 31-29, 25-18, earlier Saturday.

Aly Squires and Marissa Bubica were named to the all-tournament team for the Anteaters (5-1), who edged Cleveland State in points, kills and blocks in the loss.

Bubica had a season-best 20 kills and hit .417 against Cleveland State (5-2).

Squires led UCI with 17 kills against High point.

Menlo College

MENLO — Vanguard improved to 9-2 with a pair of wins on Saturday at Menlo College.

The Lions topped William Jessup, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12, then took care of Wayland Baptist, 25-23, 26-24, 21-25, 25-16.

SAN DIEGO — Dennis Martinez headed in a cross from Cameron Iwasa in the 78th minute of the nonconference clash on Saturday.

Michael Breslin made just two saves for UCI (2-0-1).

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — No. 9-ranked UC Irvine opened its season by winning two matches on Saturday at the Bruno Fall Classic.

Senior Mitch Wise scored five goals in a 19-2 win over MIT and Jared Osborn had four goals to pace the Anteaters’ 13-7 win earlier over St. Francis.

Alex Kazmier had 16 saves for UCI against St. Francis.

Kyle Trush and Bojan Hrlec had four combined goals each in the two wins.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

UC Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — Riley Martin finished second to lead host UC Irvine to a second-place team finish on Saturday.

Martin, a sophomore, ran the 8,000-meter course in 25 mintues, 28.1 seconds to top all but Harry Mullenga of Centra Arizona (24:50.6) in the 102-runner field.

UCI junior Alex Tebbe was sixth (25:45.0) and freshman teammate Nolan Del Valle was 11th in 26:25.4.

Conor Stanton (17th in 26:55.2), Amir Shirif (18th in 27:01.9) and Blake Wanser (19th in 27:04.1) also helped UCI post 50 team points, 28 behind Central Arizona.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

UC Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — Junior Kaycee Holcomb finished sixth to lead the host Anteaters to a fourth-place team finish in the 13-team event on Saturday.

Holcumb complted the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 39.9 seconds.

UCI’s Carlotta Pham was seventh in 18:41.8.

Sophomore Makenna McGrann was 24th in 19:33.4 for UCI.
