Briefs: Wise earns honor

UC Irvine junior driver Mitch Wise has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s water polo.

Wise scored five goals each in the Anteaters’ back-to-back victories in the UCI Invitational Saturday.

In the season-opening 16-8 win over Chapman, he scored three times in the first quarter and twice more in the second period.

Wise struck for five goals again in an 18-7 victory over Redlands later Saturday.

He earned third-team All-American and second team All-MPSF honors last season when he led UCI with 70 goals.

No. 6-ranked UCI plays host to No. 13-ranked UC Davis nonconference game Friday at 7 p.m.

Former ‘Eater shines

UC Irvine alum John Chin finished seventh in the Web.com Tour’s Mylan Classic that concluded Sunday at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg, Pa.

Chin, in recording his highest professional finish, shot 11-under par 273 (66-69-70-68) over 72 holes, seven shots behind the winner. In the final round Sunday, he shot a four-under 32 on the back nine and birdied five of his last 10 holes, including three straight on 14, 15 and 16.

Chin earned $17,460 for his showing that propelled him from 107th to 82nd on the Web.com Tour money list. He has won a total of $48,918 this season.

As a senior at UCI, Chin ranked No. 1 in the final 2010 Golfstat Cup with a 70.05 average and he finished first in four tournaments.

Chin was a 2010 Golfweek and PING All-American and he was named to the 2010 All-Nicklaus team.

He was a three-time Big West Conference Golfer of the Year and two-time medalist at the Big West Conference Championship, including in 2010 when he won the 54-hole tournament by nine shots.
