PULLMAN, Wash. — Senior outside hitter Larissa Nordyke had a team-best 11 kills and added six digs, but the Anteaters were defeated, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19, by host Washington State to open the season Friday in the Nike Cougar Invitational.

Senior outside hitter Kari Pestolesi had six kills and 11 digs, but hit just .036. Nordyke hit .121.

Sophomore opposite Taylor Smith had six kills and hit .385 for UCI, for which sophomore Marissa Alvarez had 12 assists and seven digs and freshman Mary Carls chipped in 10 assists and six digs.

Sophomore libero Kristin Winkler had 12 digs for UCI, which continues in the tournament today against Idaho and Weber State.
