Briefs: Irrelevant Week gives back

Irrelevant Week XXXV, the annual Newport Beach event that celebrates the final pick in the NFL draft, generated more than $30,000 for Goodwill of Orange County’s fitness center, event organizers said.

Tim Toone, a receiver-kick returner from Weber State University was this year’s honoree after being taken No. 255 by the Detroit Lions.

Irrelevant Week, created by Newport Beach resident Paul Salata, who played football in the NFL and at USC, has raised more than $1 million for Orange County charities.

The fitness center will be used by people with physical disabilities or chronic illnesses. Additonal contributions continue to be received.

Water fight fundraiser

More than 300 Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Football players and coaches will create Orange County’s largest water balloon fight Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and a barbeque afterward will feature Chris Manderino and Todd Marinovich.

Manderino, an Newport-Mesa Junior All-American alum, starred at Newport Harbor High and went on to play at Cal and as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.

Marinovich, a former quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, played collegiately at USC.

The water fight is part of a fundraiser for the program, in which current USC quarterback Matt Barkley played.
