Briefs: CdM second in CIF Commissioner’s Cup

Corona del Mar High finished second in the boys’ standings and Newport Harbor was fifth in the girls’ standings in the 2011-12 CIF Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup.

The program recognizes schools based on comprehensive excellence in all sports in which they compete.

The CdM boys earned 17 points, second only to Loyola of Los Angeles, which had 19. The Sea Kings posted five points for winning the CIF Southern Section Southern Division football title, and three points each for runner-up finishes in volleyball, tennis, water polo and swimming and diving.

The Newport Harbor girls posted 11 points, including five for their section crown in water polo. They also earned three points each for runner-up showings in volleyball and tennis.

Citrus Valley won the girls’ overall title with 14 points.

Polo soiree Saturday

Newport Beach Water Polo will be hosting a Summer Soiree at the Newport Aquatic Center on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be Polynesian entertainment, dinner and a welcome-home celebration for Coach Robert Lynn, an assistant coach on the U.S. men’s Olympic team and head boys’ water polo and swimming coach at Newport Harbor High.

Matsuoka triumphs

Newport Beach resident Amy Matsuoka shot four-under-par 135 to win the age 12-14 girls’ division at the 23rd annual Costa Mesa golf championship, completed Aug. 9 at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Matsuoka shot rounds of 69 and 66 to produce a six-shot margin over runner-up Alyaa Abdulghany, also of Newport Beach.

Grace Ferrell of Newport Beach (145) was third and Kristy Hirada of Costa Mesa was fifth.

Christian honored

Carly Christian, who led the Newport Harbor 18U girls’ water polo team to the championship of the Hawaii Invitational completed Aug. 12, was named MVP of the tournament.

Christian, who will be a senior at Newport Harbor High this fall, was a first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 performer as a junior with the Sailors, who won the section title and finished 27-5.

Christian was also a member of the Daily Pilot Dream Team last season.

Fry rides onward

Erin Fry, an equestrian out of Corona del Mar High, has signed to compete collegiately at the University of South Carolina.

Fry, a Hunt Seat rider, was a finalist for the 2011 Maclay national finalist and a USEF Hunt Seat national finalist. She won the Interscholastic Equestrian League varsity medal.

She was also a Maclay National Finalist in 2010.

She’ll major in business.
