Locals earn silver

The men’s junior national water polo team, including Newport Beach residents Chris Whitelegge, Dan Stevens, Curtis Fink, Reid Chase and Kyle Trush, won the silver medal at the UANA Pan American Junior Championships, recently in Montreal, Canada.

Whitelegge, a Newport Harbor High product, was named Most Valuable Goalie in the tournament.

The second-place finish qualifies the Americans for the 17th FINA World junior championships in Sopron, Hungary, Sunday through Sept. 1.

Burnham makes cut

Former Newport Harbor High volleyball standout Kirby Burnham, now a junior at USC, was among four women selected recently to represent the United States at the Federation International de Volleyball Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Burnham earned her spot by competing with 30 other American players with the U.S. training team.

The six-day tournament in Canada begins Aug. 29 and runs through Sept. 2. The main draw features 32 teams.
