Briefs: Zur wins silver

Newport Beach resident Krisztina Zur won a silver medal Friday at the International Canoe Federation Sprint World Championships in Szeged, Hungary.

Zur, who moved to the United States from Hungary last year, finished in 4 minutes, 13.47 seconds in the women’s K1 1,000-meter race. She was just more than two seconds behind the first-place finisher, Tamara Csipes of Hungary, although Zur led the race through the first two splits in the non-Olympic event.

Zur, who trains at the Newport Aquatic Center, won four 2011 World Cup Series medals earlier this year, including three golds. The four-time world champion in flat-water kayaking events moved to the United States after marrying three-time United States Olympic kayaker Rami Zur. She is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic games in London.

Also Friday, Costa Mesa resident Rich Sprout placed fourth in his heat and sixth in his semifinal, qualifying for Saturday’s K1 500-meter “C” Final.

U.S. men to semis

The United States men’s water polo World University Games team, coached by UC Irvine Coach Marc Hunt, edged Spain in overtime, 10-9, on Friday in Shenzhen, China.

Team USA, which also features former UCI standouts Greg Enloe and Griffin Lerman, advanced to Sunday’s semifinals against Russia.

Drac Wigo scored the game-winning goal for the Americans against Spain, coming on the power play with just four seconds left in overtime.

Hunt, who will soon begin his seventh year as UCI head man, credited Lerman’s two-meter defending as a key to the victory.

Musburger speaking

Brent Musburger, who broadcasts college football on ABC and ESPN, will be the keynote speakerat the eighth annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Banquet at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach on Dec. 11.

Musburger has been a major force in television sports for nearly 40 years, beginning with his days as the anchor on CBS’ popular “The NFL Today” show. Since joining ABC/ESPN in 1990, he has covered virtually every major sport in the world, including two BCS Championship games. He is the network play-by-play announcer for the Gmae of the Week along with analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

Musburger has also covered Major League Baseball, college basketball, the NFL, NBA, the Masters, the Indianapolis 500 and horce racing.

The IMPACT Foundation recognized student-athletes throughout the nation who have had the biggest impact on their teams both on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. These are characteristics that Ronnie Lott exhibited throughout his Hall of Fame career.
