Briefs: Day sixth in heptathlon

MOSCOW, Russia — Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day finished sixth in the heptathlon, completed Tuesday at the Track and Field World Championships at Luzhniki Stadium.

Day, 28, the reigning United States champion in the event, finished with 6,407 points, 143 off the personal-best total she produced to claim the American title in June.

Day, who was one point behind second place and 76 off the pace of first-day leader Ganna Melnychenko of the Ukraine, established personal records in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 8.94 seconds on Tuesday) and the 100 hurdles (12.51 seconds on Monday).

Melnychenko won the event with 6,530 points, followed by Canada’s Brianne Theisen Eaton (6,530) and Dafne Schippers of Holland (6,477). All three medalists produced PR point totals.

Claudis Roth of Germany (6,462) and Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain (6,449) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Day was close to PRs in the 200 meters, running 24.28 on Monday, and the javelin, throwing 154 feet, 9 1/8 inches on Tuesday.

But she fell well short of her top mark in the high jump (6-4 3/4), clearing just 6-0 on Monday.

Day’s shotput mark was 47-1 on Monday. Her long jump mark on Tuesday was 19 feet.

Yale lands Duncan

Corona del Mar High incoming senior Tyler Duncan will play baseball at Yale after he graduates from high school, said Sea Kings Coach John Emme on Tuesday.

Duncan, who played first base as a junior last season, hit .338 with one home run and nine runs batted in, five doubles and one triple. He scored 14 runs and walked 11 times.

Duncan will be the fifth CdM player since 2006 to continue his baseball career at an Ivy League program.
