Briefs: Hagestad finishes second

Newport Beach resident Stewart Hagestad was runner-up in the Southern California Golf Assn. Match Play Championship, completed Wednesday at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara.

Hagestad was defeated, two and one, by Niall Platt from Santa Barbara in the final. Earlier Wednesday, Hagestad beat Brandon Gama from Santa Barbara, two and one, in the semifinals.

An incoming senior at USC, Hagestad is set to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship, Monday through Aug. 19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.

SOCAL earns bronze

The SOCAL Black 18-and-under girls’ water polo team that included five local high school graduates, finished third in the Platinum Division at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics on Sunday.

Top-seeded SOCAL defeated third-seeded SET in a shootout for the bronze, after a 12-12 regulation tie at Stanford University. SOCAL included recent Corona del Mar High graduates Alex Musselman, Pippa Saunders, Victoria Pierotti and Diana Murphy, as well as 2012 Newport-Mesa Player of the Year Maddy McLaren of Newport Harbor.

SOCAL lost in the semifinals to second-seeded eventual champion Santa Barbara, 9-6. It was SOCAL’s lone loss of the tournament.

The Newport Water Polo Foundation 18-and-under girls finished seventh in the Platinum Division after beating Huntington Beach Orange, 9-7, on Sunday at St. Francis High. Newport, which was the No. 13 seed, went 5-2 in the tournament. Its only losses were to San Diego Shores and 680 Drivers, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

The CdM Aquatics 18-and-under girls finished 13th in the tournament after topping Stanford A, 11-6, on Sunday at St. Francis High. CdM, which was seeded ninth, was 5-3 in the four-day tournament.

Newport’s 16-and-under girls finished 15th in the Platinum Division after besting Clovis Blue, 12-7, in the 15th-place match at Woodside High. The locals were seeded 27th.

CdM’s 14-and-under girls finished eighth in the Gold Division, a step below platinum. CdM’s 12-and-under girls finished 12th in the Platinum Division.

In the 10-and-under division, which is co-ed, Newport Beach Water Polo Club finished 11th in the Platinum Division.
