Briefs: SOCAL into Junior Olympics semifinals

The top-seeded SOCAL Black 18-and-under girls’ team, which features five local players, has advanced to the semifinals of the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics in the Bay Area.

SOCAL Black defeated 680 Drivers, 9-2, in a quarterfinal match Saturday. SOCAL, which features recent Corona del Mar High graduates Alex Musselman, Pippa Saunders, Diana Murphy and Victoria Pierotti, as well as Newport Harbor graduate Maddy McLaren, will play second-seeded Santa Barbara in a semifinal match Sunday at 9 a.m. at Stanford University.

The division championship match is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Sunday, at Stanford.

Newport Water Polo Foundation’s 18-and-under girls will play Huntington Beach Orange for seventh place on Sunday at 1:50 p.m., at St. Francis High. The CdM Aquatics 18-and-under girls won twice Saturday and will play Stanford A for 13th place at 10:20 a.m. at St. Francis High.

In other age divisions, Newport’s 16-and-under girls play Clovis Blue for 16th place. CdM’s 14-and-under girls will play Greenwich Water Polo for seventh place in the Gold Division. CdM’s 12-and-under girls will play Foothill for 11th place.

In the coed 10-and-under division, Newport will play Foothill for 11th place.

CdM boys capture bronze at Junior Olympics

The Corona del Mar 14-and-under boys’ team won bronze in the silver division in the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics on Tuesday.

CdM edged out Irvine Kahuna, 9-8, in the third-place match at San Jose State.

CdM, coached by Corey Delahunt, went 5-2 in the tournament. CdM’s only losses were by a goal and via shootout, respectively, to SOCAL Gold and United White.
