The top-seeded SOCAL Black 18-and-under girls’ team won its Platinum Division pool Friday at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics in the Bay Area.

SOCAL features recent Corona del Mar High graduates Alex Musselman, Pippa Saunders, Diana Murphy and Victoria Pierotti, as well as Newport Harbor graduate Maddy McLaren. SOCAL defeated CdM Aquatics, 10-5, in its first game of the day before beating San Diego Shores, 12-5.

SOCAL plays 680 Drivers, the No. 4 seed, in a quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. Saturday at Palo Alto High. If SOCAL wins the game it will make Sunday’s semifinals; a loss and SOCAL would have another play-in game to the semifinals.

Newport Water Polo Foundation, the No. 13 seed, defeated Huntington Beach Orange, 10-6, in its first game Friday before falling to 680 Drivers in a shootout.

Newport plays again at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stanford, and can still make the semifinals with three consecutive wins Saturday.
