Briefs: Knapp sits 21st in Oregon

Jake Knapp, a recent Estancia High graduate, shot three-over-par 73 in the third round Thursday and is tied for 21st at the 46th Pacific Coast Amateur on the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Trails Course in Bandon, Ore.

Knapp, bound for UCLA, is 12-over-par 224 through three rounds. He enters Friday’s final round 11 shots back of the leader, Jarred Bossio of Olympia, Wash.

During the second day of the tournament on Wednesday, Knapp and two other golfers teamed to comprise the Southern California Golf Assn. team that finished tied for third in the Morse Cup.

Knapp joined future UCLA teammates Anton Arboleda and Manav Shah in the 15-team Morse Cup field.

Chang Tennis Classic

The Newport Beach Tennis Club and the Costa Mesa Tennis Center are among the sites for the second annual Michael Chang Tennis Classic that begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

Chang, a former French Open champion and world’s No. 2-ranked professional tennis player, will play host to the three-day charity event that has added a high school division.

Scholarships will be awarded to the high school tennis programs of the winning boys’ and girls’ high school players who will compete in singles and doubles.

Kaitlin Sandeno, who has won four Olympic medals in swimming, will also speak to high school athletes and their families during a lunch event at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Friday between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Sandeno helped the U.S. set a world-record in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay race at the 2004 Athens Games, where the team won the gold medal.

The main tennis tournament is a United States Tennis Assn. sanctioned event. Prize money will be awarded in open divisions for men’s singles, women’s singles and doubles.

The Newport Beach Tennis Club is the tournament’s primary location.

Last year’s charity event raised $7,500. The Chang Family Foundation matched that number, resulting in a $15,000 donation to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the Japanese Earthquake and the Tsunami Relief Fund.

This year’s proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, which helps provide affordable housing to low-income families.

There will also be a Kickoff Clinic, open to all ages and players ranging from beginner to advanced.

All participants will learn from some former professional players and coaches in Southern California, including Chang, his older brother, Carl Chang, former pro and longtime Corona del Mar resident Phil Dent, Kimberly Po, Debbie Graham, Scott Davis, Adam Davidson and Rob Rye.

Ortiz at OC Fair

Tito Ortiz, the recently retired mixed martial arts fighter from Huntington Beach, will be a guest at the fifth installment of the SummerFist Series at the Orange County Fair on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Ortiz, the Huntington Beach Bad Boy, lost a decision to Forrest Griffin in the final UFC fight of his career earlier this month. The UFC Hall of Fame member who defended his light heavyweight title a UFC-record five straight times, helped build the sport of MMA and he is considered one of the top fighters of all time.

Reserved cage-side seats for SummerFist V at the Action Sports Arena are $25, while bleacher seats are free with fair admission.
