Briefs: CdM boys’ polo team wins international tourney
The Corona del Mar 18-and-under boys won the Pan Pacific Games in New Zealand on Tuesday, defeating New South Wales, 9-6, in the championship game.
Corona del Mar High incoming senior Reid Chase was named the 18-and-under tournament MVP.
Coach Barry O’Dea coached the Sea Kings at the tournament, which is the biggest water polo event in the Southern hemisphere.

Levin signs pro contract
Camille Levin can now call herself a professional soccer player.
Levin, a recent Stanford graduate from Newport Coast, has signed an 18-month professional contract with the Goteborg FC, a woman’s club in Sweden, said Desmond Levin, Camille’s father.
Levin was drafted in the first round of the Women’s Professional Soccer draft in January, but the league folded.
Levin has found a professional team to play for after starring at Stanford in her senior year in which she helped the school win its first NCAA women’s soccer title.
Levin, who went to Tarbut V’Torah Community Day School in Irvine and played for the Newport Beach-based Slammers, was at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday, Desmond said.
Desmond said his daughter was going to receive the Capital One Cup award, given to the best women’s Division I athletic program in the nation, on behalf of the Stanford women’s athletic program during the ESPN awards show.

Breakers lose on road
The Orange County Breakers dropped to 1-2 after losing on the road to the Sacramento Capitals, 24-14, Friday night.
The Breakers got their lone win in women’s doubles when Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Jana Juricova teamed up for a 5-4 win over the Capitals’ duo of Asia Muhammad and Yasmin Schnack.
Mardy Fish secured the win for Sacramento as he closed out the match with a 5-2 win over John-Patrick Smith in men’s singles.
The Breakers play again Saturday, taking on Sacramento this time at the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine. The match, which is Orange County Family Night, starts at 7 p.m.

UCI runner-up again
A national championship in men’s volleyball, a fourth-place showing in women’s water polo and Charles Jock’s NCAA championship in the 800 meters helped UC Irvine finish second in the NCAAA Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Assn. rankings among 95 schools that do not have football teams.
UCI earned 274 points, bettered only by Pepperdine (334) in Division I-AAA. Boston University (230), Denver University (227.5) and Long Beach State (226) rounded out the top five.
It’s the second straight runner-up showing for the Anteaters, who earned the top spot in 2007, were fourth in 2010, second in 2009 and fifth in 2008.
Also helping UCI’s point total were NCAA Tournament appearances for men’s and women’s soccer, with the men’s team advancing to the second round.
UCI ranked No. 69 among all NCAA Division I institutions, finishing better than Football Bowl Subdivision schools such as Boise State, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Utah, Wake Forest, UNLV and Washington State.
Stanford won its 18th consecutive Directors Cup award among all Division I programs.
